Is cat/cow the same thing as pelvic tilts?
It is very common to compare movements recommeded by therapists to familair exercise moves and classes. This happens frequently when someone becomes pregnant and they begin to research what movement is beneficial for prenancy and preparing for birth.
Prenatal and birth focused classes are extrememly beneficial, but they are not the same thing. When deciding what, when and how you will prepare for birth, it is important to recognize that although there is a reason for exercie and group classes, it is not the same thing as the homework recommended by your health and wellness.
We are going to look at pelvic tilts today. You will see two videos. One is with a alternative to a foam roller (it is a littel softer and smaller than traditional rollers), and then one with a half roller (which supports the sacrum and si joint if there is hypermobility or instability in te pelvis).
The biggest difference between cat/cow and pelvic tilts is that cat/cow focuses on articultion from the pelvis al the way up the spine and to the head. Pelvic tilts isolates the pelvis from the spine by focusing on stabilzing the spine and head while rotating the pelvis in the hip socket.
I want to be clear, there will be spinal movement. We are fluid beings and we also have created a lifetime of patterns in our bodies. It took me weeks of practicing how to move my pelvis without my head lifting like I was growing taller. I found lots of ways to cheat this homework before I was able to remotely begin to do it correctly, and even now I can see in the video that there is movement in places that shoudl be stabilizing.
We are amazing creatures and with that comes a sense of curiosity and play. I hope this distinction between cat/cow and pelvic tilts bring s sense of wonder and you have fun with it. There is no test at the end of the day afterall, so I hope you find more laughter with yourself as you feel the pelvis mobilize.
